About Caroline Matthews

Caroline Matthews is the founder of Primary Notes, a licensed Musikgarten instructor, and an experienced early childhood music educator. She specializes in group music and movement classes for children ages 0–9 and offers private piano lessons for ages 4–12.

Originally from the UK, Caroline holds a degree in Elementary Education with a focus on Physical Education and earned Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) before relocating to the Pacific Northwest over 20 years ago. Her teaching journey has included over a decade of experience in Pre-K classrooms, as well as work with children with physical and developmental disabilities—an experience that deepened her commitment to inclusive, compassionate teaching.

Caroline’s approach is rooted in movement-based, play-centered learning. She is certified in the Musikgarten curriculum and incorporates Kodály-inspired methods that emphasize singing, rhythm development, and hands-on musical exploration. This combination supports the development of coordination, creativity, listening skills, and a lasting connection to music.

Since 2015, Caroline has taught piano lessons both in her home and in the community, and since 2023, she has managed a small music studio offering classes in schools, preschools, and community spaces. She also serves as the assistant director of a local children’s choir and is an active member of The Westside Singers Choir.

When she’s not teaching, Caroline enjoys spending time with her family. She’s a keen runner, gardener, and tea drinker!

Caroline’s blend of experience in early childhood education, music, movement, and inclusive practice allows her to connect with young learners in a meaningful way. Through Primary Notes, she brings music to life for children, families, and schools—one playful step at a time.

Curriculum

Caroline is certified in the Musikgarten curriculum, a research-based program that supports children’s natural musical development through movement, play, and hands-on experiences. In addition, classes draw on Kodály-inspired methods that focus on singing, rhythm, and active music-making. Together, these approaches create a rich and engaging learning environment—building a strong musical foundation while encouraging creativity, coordination, and a lasting connection to music.
